Fresh Starts

The excitement and anticipation leading up to the presidential inaugural was palpable. People were clearly anxious for “change” whether or not they were happy with the results of the election. I don’t think it is just the economy driving the feeling, I think that human nature is wired to want – and need – change periodically.

Sometimes fresh starts are our own choice, some times they are thrust upon us. My father’s Navy career meant that we moved every two years. So I spent my entire childhood in a cycle of being “the new kid” for about a year, then slowly making some friends, then starting to distance myself and say good-bye when the next move was upon us. I finally figured out that this could work to my advantage and I could “re-invent” myself upon arriving in a new school (complete with an adoring – and fictitious – long-distance boyfriend!!).  I could try out new personas, new friends, and new hobbies. Some stuck, and some didn’t, but I learned a lot about myself in the process.

Now that I am an adult, I find that I still crave a little change periodically. But it does beg the question, if we COULD change something about ourselves or our lives, SHOULD we or WOULD we? What would you change about your life if you could? Think beyond what model car you will be buying next, and consider what changes would make a positive impact on your life? What would reduce your stress? You don’t have to quit your job, relocate or dump the boyfriend.  Unless those things are causing the stress! It can be inwardly focused changes like meditating or keeping a journal, or outwardly focused activities like starting to volunteer.

So here is my challenge to myself – and to you – and that’s to find a Fresh Start in an area that will make a positive, stress-reducing difference in my life. I will keep you updated about my progress through this blog and I would love to hear from you about your fresh starts as well.
