(Time) Change of Season

We don’t need the clocks changing or an official end to Daylight Savings Time to know that the days are shorter. For most of us, this season is duller and colder and we might sleep or eat more as we get through it, but it is still bearable.

Time changes, much like jet lag, can be overcome with exercise, exposure to natural light to reset your body clock, and lots of fluid and less caffeine. For those experiencing difficulty sleeping, melatonin (a naturally occurring hormone in your body that can be mimicked in supplements) can help get you back in a good sleep pattern. Exercise is helpful and doesn’t have to be intense, but instead can be as simple as a long walk or yoga and stretching. Switching to herbal teas instead of caffeinated coffee for a few days can allow your body to recalibrate.

If you find your lethargy or “blues” are more severe or don’t dissipate, you might have Seasonal Affective Disorder which brings debilitating depression. Symptoms can include anxiety, oversleeping, loss of interest in normal activities, and appetite changes. Check out this Mayo Clinic website for more information and talk to your health care professional about options for dealing with this.
